Mobile, Alabama was Born to Celebrate! Known as being the birthplace of Mardi Gras, Mobile boasts a rich past that spans centuries. Founded in 1702, French, Spanish, British, Creole, Catholic, Greek and African legacies have influenced everything from architecture to cuisine, creating a miniature melting pot in the Port City.
With so much historical influence from so many different cultures, the Mobile logo couldn’t hang its hat on just one thing. The challenge came with just how to represent a city that celebrates with pride their many cultures. The mark had to be simple, succinct, adaptable, and immediately recognizable.
While visiting Mobile for a destination immersion, I noticed the beauty and intricacies of wrought iron being used throughout the city and neighborhoods. I used this as my primary influence on the logo. I chose to use a stylized classic typeface for the word mar. Something that could be easily shaped within wrought iron and which also harkened back to a more classical time. I also believed it was an important nod to make mention of the city’s founding since it’s history is Mobile’s biggest influence. I end-capped this with two wrought iron-like embellishments to seat the logo. With such a variety of colors within their existing color palette, the primary logo could be used with multiple colors and still retain its presence.
