Albany

Albany’s history dates back more than 400 years. It was already a Dutch trading post when Henry Hudson arrived, making it one of the oldest contiguous cities in the United States. Albany has been the capital of of the state of New York since 1797, and has been a center for government, banking, railroads, and international trade. Without ignoring its historical dutch roots, Albany has been able to retain its charm and character while progressing into the twenty-first century.

Being rooted in so much of our country’s history, the Albany logo had to embrace its past all the while looking to the future. It had to be classic, welcoming, rich, and historic. Albany is a city of storytellers, from New York to even the United States, the logo had to represent that preamble.

Using the concept of storytelling juxtaposed with the historic roots of the city, I chose to start out with a script typeface as the logo mark. I also wanted the logo to feel more modern to show that the destination was not only rooted historically, but is continuing to keep moving towards the future. The stylized “A” as well as the “b” was used to lead the viewer’s eyes across the logo to the natural “ny” that finishes the logo, a little subtle nod the state it represents.
