Designing for calm
Sensei Lana’i is a wellness retreat designed around a simple idea. Step away from the noise and focus on feeling better. The brand blends modern science with Eastern wellness practices and organizes its philosophy around three pillars: Move, Nourish, and Rest.
Originally the website was meant to be temporary. The plan was to launch quickly and return later for a deeper creative process. Instead, the project took on a life of its own. Even knowing it would evolve, the goal was to make it feel complete from the start, not disposable.
I focused on creating a calm, open design language that matched the retreat’s philosophy. Generous white space, immersive photography, and larger typography established a clear hierarchy without adding noise. Simple, repeatable modules with clear calls to action kept the experience structured while still feeling relaxed.

The challenge was the amount of content. Left unchecked, it would have quickly broken that sense of calm. The solution was to expand the system outward, introducing additional pages to house deeper information while keeping primary views focused. Clear navigation and consistent modules made it easy to move through the experience without feeling overwhelmed.
The Move, Nourish, and Rest pillars naturally anchor the site. They are given space to stand on their own through large type and dedicated modules, allowing them to guide the rhythm of the page without feeling forced.
A subtle detail runs throughout the design. Sensei’s brand mark is inspired by the shape of a torii gate, and that influence quietly frames the layout system. It’s not something most users would notice, but it creates a sense of balance and flow across the experience.
The result is a calm, highly visual platform that handles a surprising amount of content without losing its sense of clarity. What began as a temporary solution ultimately became the foundation for the long-term site, which continues to evolve today.
