Guam.

Designing with cultural respect

Guam is a place where life slows down just enough for you to notice the details. The rhythm of the ocean, the warmth of the people, and the deep cultural pride rooted in Chamorro tradition. I had the opportunity to help bring that spirit online twice, first as Art Director, and later as Creative Director leading the redesign.

Between the two projects, the goal was evolution rather than reinvention. The brand remained intact, but the platform needed to grow with new technology, stronger mobile usability, and a deeper emphasis on Guam’s cultural identity.

Our team traveled to Guam for a FAM tour before beginning the work. We explored the island as visitors would, meeting local businesses, experiencing the food and culture, and spending time in the landscapes that make Guam so distinctive. Those experiences shaped the visual tone of the site, with a clear focus on culture first, followed by color, texture, and the natural rhythm of the island.

There was a conscious effort to avoid the generic “tropical paradise” look that often defines destination sites. Instead, the design leans into what makes Guam unique, drawing from Chamorro culture through patterns, textures, and iconography that feel authentic to the island rather than applied for effect.

The phrase “Håfa Adai” became a guiding thread throughout the experience. More than a greeting, it reflects the island’s welcoming spirit and sense of community, carried through vibrant photography, cultural patterns, and a layout designed to feel open, relaxed, and inviting.

Photography and pattern work do much of the heavy lifting, allowing the experience to feel immersive without becoming overdesigned. Subtle details, like the integration of culturally rooted textures and iconography throughout the interface, reinforce the identity without overwhelming the content.

Because Guam attracts travelers from around the world, the platform also needed to work across languages and cultures. Simplified navigation and multi language support helped ensure that visitors could easily explore the island’s beaches, culture, and experiences regardless of where they were coming from.

The finished platform received strong feedback from the tourism board, improved engagement, and continues to support Guam’s tourism efforts today. For me, it was also a reminder of how much stronger design becomes when you experience a place firsthand.
