Designing a system, not just a site
Pacific Retirement Services manages more than 50 senior living communities across the country, but their digital presence had grown into a patchwork of inconsistent sites. Some were outdated, some were difficult to manage, and launching new communities required more effort than it should have. What they really needed was not another website, but a system.
We started with a redesign of the corporate site, but the real opportunity was building a scalable framework for the entire portfolio. Instead of creating dozens of one-off websites, I designed a modular system that could support community sites across the organization. Using fourteen community sites and the corporate site as the foundation, we developed templates that allowed new properties to launch quickly without reinventing the wheel.
The visual direction focused on creating a calm, trustworthy, and welcoming experience without feeling cold or overly institutional. Senior living often leans dated or clinical, so the design used clear typography, thoughtful spacing, and a steady layout rhythm to create something that felt modern while still being approachable. There was a deliberate effort to avoid heavy decoration and stock-driven layouts, letting the content and imagery feel more natural and grounded.
The system balanced consistency with individuality. I created two layout directions, one angular and one more fluid, along with a color-driven module system that allowed each property’s palette to shape the interface. This made it possible for every community to feel distinct while still clearly belonging to the larger brand, with content scaling cleanly across sites without becoming repetitive.
Close collaboration with developers helped define reusable modules, templates, and CMS patterns early in the process. Once the foundation was set, everything moved faster, from approvals to implementation. The framework also extended into a unified email design system, creating consistency beyond the website.
The result is a scalable platform that allows PRS to grow its network without rebuilding its digital presence each time a new community opens. It simplified internal workflows, improved launch speed, and created a more cohesive experience across the entire portfolio.
